17+ Ways to Make Extra Income in 2017!

Online Surveys

Believe it or not, you can make money from taking online surveys.  Yes, you read that right.  Now when I say make money, I mean $50-100 or more per month depending on how many surveys you take a month.  The more the better when it comes to making extra income.  Don’t expect to become rich from taking surveys but you can supplement your income while you are watching tv with you family.

I’ve always been skeptical about people that say the make money online.  This is a legitimate company that I have used to earn extra cash online.

Freelance Writing

Are you a good writer?  Do you like to write?  If so, you can turn your freelance writing skills into your next side hustle.  You’d be surprised at how many companies and bloggers hire freelance writers to help them with their websites, brochures, and books.

The best thing about freelance writing is you don’t have to have a journalism degree or be an expert in grammar.  Just start writing!  Practice makes perfect.  In addition, a free app called Grammarly will help you with the grammar.

Starting a blog is a great way to get your writing portfolio in front of a larger audience.  In fact, I landed my first freelance writing gig through my blogs twitter account!

Finding your first freelance writing job can be tough.  Although there is plenty of work out there, you have to work to find it.  You can send cold pitches to sites that you know accept work or check out job boards for opportunities.  Check out the two sites below if you are looking for freelance writing jobs:

Graphic & Web Design

Did you study graphic or web design in school?  Or have you picked up skills along the way through courses and experience?  Either way, there are plenty of people that need your help!

Entrepreneurs, small business owners, bloggers, and even larger companies will pay big money for your expertise.  Similar to finding freelance writing jobs, it can be difficult to find your initial graphic or web design gig.  The site, Fiverr, is a great resource to those starting out. In fact, I hired someone on Fiverr a few months ago to help design my business cards.

Virtual Assistant

Entrepreneurs and small business owners typically need help.  The help could range from accounting work to social media management, and even replying to emails among many other tasks.  Instead of hiring a full-time employee, many will opt for a virtual assistant.

That is where you come in.

This is your chance to show off your expertise to someone truly in need.  The best part is if you do a good job you will likely land yourself a longer term online side hustle.  In addition, it could result in referral business from other entrepreneurs.

Virtual Assistants in America typically get paid between $15-75 per hour.  $15 on the low end for someone just starting out and $75 for someone who is experienced and can possess special skills.

Social Media Strategy & Management

Are you good a social media?  Although social media may seem easy to many millennials, there are many that struggle with building a dedicated social media following.

The first way to sell your social media skills is through social media strategy.  Social Media Strategy involves creating a strategy for another company to implement.  Basically, you tell them what they need to do and they will work to implement your strategy.  This may also involve initially getting their social media accounts set up.

On the other side of things, once you create a social media strategy for a company or blog you can manage the social media platform for them.  Of course, this is more intensive; however, there are a variety of free social media tools that can help you manage.

  • Buffer
  • Hootsuite
  • Co-schedule
  • Tailwind

If you are good at social media and can show your skills, this can be another lucrative online side hustle.

Blog Management

Once you have started your own blog, you can even help others by getting into blog management.  Blog management includes handling the day to day activities for another person’s personal or company blog.  Tasks range from writing posts (i.e. freelance writing) to responding to commenters and producing social media comment.  Each job is truly unique.

Blog Management jobs could last for a week or two while a blogger is on vacation or needing a break.  Or the job could be more long term.

Starting your own blog is a great way you can show off your skills to potential clients.  In addition, as you are connecting with other bloggers in your niche, you may run into someone that needs some help.

Affiliate Marketing

Did you know you could get paid for your large social media following?  Most bloggers, podcasters, and other social media influencers use affiliate marketing as a way to make passive income.

You don’t need your own blog to get into affiliate marketing (even though your own blog may help).  Do you have a large social media following?  If so, companies will pay you to be a brand ambassador.  Basically, you promote their products in front of your audience and they will pay you.

Instagram users who have more than 100,000 can earn $700-900 per photo!  If you have 500,000 followers, then you can command between $2,000-$3,000 per photo. Certain extremely popular fashion-focused Instagram users are able to get $8,000 per photo.

If you have a large social media following, then you may be considered an influencer in your niche.  As an influencer, your social media following will buy things that you promote and brands want to cash in on that.

Many bloggers and podcasters use affiliate marketing as a stream of income.  You don’t have to have a blog or podcast to connect with brands, but it surely can help.

  1. Great post, Tia! I’ve been renting a room out in my home ever since I bought it 4 years ago, and it’s netted me roughly $20,000 in the process. If you find great roommates and don’t mind sharing your space, it’s a great avenue to make extra cash, especially since it’s something you already have.

    1. That is awesome, Brittney! I have considered renting out my home for about a year but haven’t gone through with it.

  2. Can I just beg anyone reading this to go into Pinterest account management? I have had an awful experience the past year with a handful of Pinterest managers and trying to find a competent Pinterest manager for my blog. No one seems to have much skill in it, even those selling professional services. If you can get good at driving traffic to blogs and getting bloggers pins re-pinned, you can ask for a LOT of money.

  3. This is why I tell people there is no reason to not have a side hustle! SO many things that you can do in your spare time to earn extra cash. Thanks for sharing Tia!
